FARM MANAGER

Common Ground Project is currently looking for an experienced Farm Manager.

Common Ground Project is a not-for-profit 4-acre regenerative agriculture farm with an onsite restaurant that promotes food security by creating fair access to locally grown, healthy food. We are located in Freshwater Creek on the Victorian Surf Coast. Proceeds raised from the farm and restaurant are used to offer training, education and employment pathways for people facing disadvantage in the community.

Grounded in regenerative farming, and in recognition of the urgent need for a more resilient food system, we believe that connection to land, food and community can drive real, meaningful social change.

The Role

This role is responsible for all aspects of the Common Ground Project Farm. It requires a strong, practical knowledge of small plot intensive farming, and a commitment to growing healthy produce to improve the quality and uniqueness of dishes served in venues and to our customers. Currently managing four acres of land and the hothouse, your purpose is to grow as much fresh produce using natural farming methods to maximise selling potential.

Key Responsibilities

-Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all staff and volunteers that work on the farm, delivering a clean and safe working environment and compliance with workplace safety laws

-Managing all aspects of the small orchard of mixed fruit trees, mainly apples.

-Managing the flock of 30 laying hens in a small chicken caravan, they are rotated through the orchard. Duties will include all aspects of animal husbandry 

-Manage the growing of seasonal vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers etc

-Ensure cultivation of beds, seasonal pruning and maintenance of orchard trees, nursery maintained, ground keeping duties and visual maintenance of the garden

-Create a CGP annual crop plan to ensure maximum production levels and help maintain CGP's standards of production to ensure the highest quality produce

-Oversee weekly harvests, washing and packing of fresh produce, ensuring hygiene and safety measures are being followed

-Oversee insect and weed control, fertility monitoring and general field observation

-Provide an enjoyable and therapeutic learning environment for staff, corporates & volunteers (patiently and respectfully)

-Assist with managing the farming related online presence & virtual store, creating videos and content of natural/ regenerative farming practices

-Updating the weekly produce list for clients, communicating with customers and clients via phone, email & social media

-Assist in the integration of farm with other Mulberry Group programs and attract wholesale customers

About You

Your passion for food, regenerative farming and sustainability form the basis of your personal and professional values.

To be successful in this role, you will have a minimum of 3 years’ proven experience in a similar role with expertise in Regenerative Agriculture. You will be willing and able to work in the field and office undertaking hard, repetitive and physical work.

As a leader, you will display a high degree of initiative, ability to think strategically, and problem solve. You have a professional presence and pride yourself on your ability to interact with people from all walks of life and build a community. As a manager of others and a valued member of the team, you can develop a positive, value-driven and empathetic culture across the business.

A current Drivers License is a must.
